Since the wild storms last week I've been following the news of the lost containers from the MV Zim Kingston. The pictures of refrigerators, toys and other items littering the coast got me thinking about the choices we make as consumers. Do I really need that toy, piece of clothing, etc? Can I find a similar item that is made closer to home? Those questions are a part of every choice I make at Vessel Refillery. I buy primarily from Canadian companies. Waste Reduction Week
Waste Reduction Week is kicking off with Circular Economy as today's theme. A circular economy supports materials and resources being used again & again. That's what we do a Vessel Refillery by delivery products in returnable & refillable mason jars. Since we opened in March, we've stopped approximately 860 pieces of plastic packaging from entering the system.

Zero Waste vs Low Waste
I was describing Vessel Refillery to a friend recently. He noticed that I didn't use the term Zero Waste in my description. That is on purpose. It would be a simple way to explain what I do, but it makes me uncomfortable. I've preferred to say Low Waste or Package Free because Vessel Refillery does use plastic and produces waste. I've done my best to reduce plastics & packaging. I select suppliers with that in mind. I reuse everything that I can, give away things I don't have use for, and recycle the rest.
